"Today we are redefining the geography of community and accepting shared accountability for common human values. We have the chance to extend the notion that all men are created equal to every human being on the planet. This will require global structures and products we are only beginning to imagine.... Each of us in his or her own way can contribute something by thinking -- and acting -- like a true global citizen. We have only one world for all of us on earth, and the future really is ours to create, in a world we dare to imagine together."
I asked my 10 years old brother why there are so many conflicts on the earth yesterday, and he told me: "While you are happy with having an apple, you notice that the people beside you are having a mango. You will not be happy with the apply anymore." It's true that people always want better stuff. For individuals, it can be nicer cars, bigger houses, and higher pay. For countries, it would be higher productivity, edge-cutting technologies, and even power in the aerospace. So I think the key point is not intervening and telling people that you have to share your wealth and make the whole society better off, and instead, we should always strength that you can not and should never create your own wealth at the cost of depriving others'. While us living in this safe wealth and abundant environment believe the earth village concept, this is not true to everyone. Imagine you are born and live in Somali for your whole life, can you ever believe that you are a global citizen?
So I don't think we are global citizens in terms of we are living in one world. No, we are not. Simply because we never had a chance to experience other's life, and it would be too easy to say but we can always think about why these conflicts happened and what can we do as an outsider to help and improve the situation. As of the wars and civil conflicts I'm talking about above, I insist that the first step is identifying what is the reason for the war and spreading the idea to countereffect the reason.

ReplyDeleteI like all the ideas you brought up especially of not depriving someone else at the expense of being wealthy or successful. I believe solving this issue starts with helping create a bridge of understanding between the two social classes, and stop such a disconnect that there is today. I like the concept that the way we can help individuals is giving the resources for them to help themselves. I think the Blue Sweater offers more of an insight on the ideas presented.
ReplyDeleteHey Nicole,
ReplyDeleteI like the tone and attitude you provide in this post, and I do think that's the appropriate way for today's world. It is so true that people‘ s desires are unstoppable, we are always looking for better things, and I think this is the basic reason why there's always wars going on. Because resources on this planet is limited, people have to fight each other in order to get more resources to live.
